Photo Gallery - Africa Mercy under Construction

Here are some shots of the Africa Mercy under construction. October 7, 2004, the Africa Mercy crossed the Tyne River from Wallsend to Hebburn. The first photos are from the final days in the drydock, followed by shots of the 'sail' across the river (she was tugged across). Photos from earlier in the year are still visible at the bottom of the gallery. Click on the thumbnail for larger view.

Before she became the Africa Mercy, she was the Dronning Ingrid, i.e. Queen Ingrid, a Danish rail ferry. The letters from the old name have been removed and the new name welded in place. As you can see from the photos, it's important to have vision! Sometimes it's hard to imagine these empty decks transformed into housing and hospital.

At the very bottom of the page are pictures of those who ran in the Great North Run to raise funds for Mercy Ships. This is the world's largest half marathon and it's all about fundraising for charities. Funds raised were designated for the CT scanner on the Africa Mercy.
